CYO SPORTS
Any child in the 4th-8th grade who attends Curé of Ars school or is a registered member of the parish may participate in CYO sports. "The mission of the CYO is to offer all, who are eligible, the opportunity to participate in all the CYO sponsored programs. Participation, in the athletic events, is to be considered primary. 'Competition and winning' are by-products of participating and are of lesser importance. Participation, complete honesty and fair play, demonstrated by coaches of unquestionable Christian and Moral Character provide youth with direction to grow in the image of Christ."
ONLINE CYO PARENT RELEASE FORMS
All CYO participants will have to complete a mandatory online parent release form. This replaces the mandatory paper Parent Release Form from year's past. There will be a $20 fee associated with this registration, payable by credit card only. This online registration will only need to be completed one time, per participant, for the entire current calendar school year regardless of the number of CYO sports participated in this year. Please complete this online registration as soon as possible if your student plans to participate in football, volleyball, basketball or track. Your child cannot be placed on a roster until this Online Registration is completed. Students will still need to attend Curé sport registration sign-ups outside the gym at designated times. To complete this mandatory form online, please go to www.cyojwa.org and click CYO Online Registration and follow the prompts.
COACHES & VOLUNTEERS:
The CYO program is successful because of the many volunteers that give up their time for the players. If you would like to help with coaching, scorekeeping, registration and uniform distribution, please call the specific coordinator or the athletic director or e-mail cureofarscyo@hotmail.com. Coaching assignments are not finalized until after the Player Evaluations and are up to the specific sport coordinator and athletic director. Coaching two CYO teams simultaneously is not allowed. Prior to becoming a head coach, one year of assistant coaching is preferred.
All CYO coaches must be at least 21 years of age and meet 4 requirements to be eligible to coach in the program.
1. NYSCA certified in the specific sport they have volunteered to coach. This is achieved by attending a CYO certification meeting or clinic for that sport. Please see the specific sport for the dates and locations. Once a coach is certified in that sport, he/she does not have to renew certification unless they are not a head coach for 3 consecutive years.
2. Attend the CYO coaches meeting. Every HEAD coach must attend a meeting each season they coach. Please see the specific sport for the dates and locations.
3. Attend a Curé of Ars coaches meeting. Each sports coordinator will hold a meeting to distribute equipment, practice times and rosters as well as answer any questions about the Curé of Ars program. Please see specific sport for the date and time.
4. Complete the VIRTUS program prior to coaching. Contact Maureen Mancina for more information at 913-642-9522 or visit www.virtus.org.
GAME CANCELLATIONS: Call 913-981-2200 after 6:00 a.m. Sat., or 10:30 a.m. Sun.
CYO Game Schedules, Results, Maps and the Handbook can be found on their website: www.cyojwa.org
GYM USE: The gym is a parish facility and made available to the CYO after all other parish activities are scheduled. If there is any time available after that, parishioners may request time by calling Joe Peterson.
Practice Field: To schedule time, please call Carol Pidcoe 649-3039.

EVALUATIONS
We want the CYO Volleyball program to be fun and fair. The fun is for the coaches and players. Our job is to facilitate a fair process for evaluating players. The purpose of the Player Evaluation Process is to separate players into teams with 8 to 10 players. Consistent with the CYO League, we have elected to separate teams based on skill level (A, B, C). We are sensitive to the fact that there are social concerns with dividing up the teams up this way, but the other alternatives have issues as well. We think the key to reducing parents' concerns is to have a fair process to dividing the teams. We feel that we have that, but we are always open to suggestions.
We use 3-4 evaluators per session, so each player is evaluated by at least 3-4 different people that have no association to that particular group. They are asked to score the players on a variety of drills and skills. After the evaluators finish scoring the players, the rest is just a matter of adding up the numbers and deciding how many players are on each team. The cut-off's are done based on the evaluators' numbers. We want all of the Players, Parents and Coaches to be confident in the integrity of the evaluation process. Players that miss the evaluations are generally placed on the lowest level team. However, every year a few players miss one or two of the evaluation sessions due to serious excused illnesses, injuries or significant conflicts. We handle these on a case-by-case basis, but our goal is to place the player on the correct team based on skill level, as long as it is fair to all players. You must call us if your child will miss any part of the evaluation.
In our effort to help the players relax and have fun during the evaluation process, we do not allow any one in the gym during the sessions. This allows the players to focus on the floor leader without the additional distraction of spectators.
During registration, we do ask the players if they are participating in any other activity during the season that might conflict with their attendance at a CYO game. Our organization is assessed a forfeit fine if we do not have enough players for a game. Participation in another sport has no determination on player placement, but does assist us in deciding how many players to roster on a team. By avoiding forfeit fines, we are able to keep our player fees as low as possible.
Every player who goes through the evaluation process has an equal opportunity, each and every year, to make an "A" team. Coaching assignments have no impact on a player's score. Under no circumstances will players be placed on a higher or lower level team, just because their parents volunteer to coach. We think the integrity of the Player Evaluations rest on this premise and most people volunteer for the right reasons, anyway.
Evaluation Sessions are scheduled for:
| Wednesday, August 20th | 4:00-6:00 p.m. | 5th grade * 1st session |
| | 6:30-8:30 p.m. | 6th grade |
| Thursday, August 21st | 4:00-6:00 p.m. | 7th grade |
